2015 NY Jets, Free Agency

Well so far we are a week into the new league year when free agency begins in the NFL and the New York Jets have made seven solid acquisitions to put themselves back into (may be) contender status.

The new (old) look secondary with the bookends of Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie are going to be left out there 1-on-1 very often in Todd Bowles' defensive scheme. Buster Skrine has been steadily improving and gives them a nickel option that will certainly be an upgrade over Kyle Wilson. Poor Dee Milliner, he has been reduced to dime packages for now. Marcus Gilchrist tightens up the back end of the secondary meaning Dawan Landry has become expendable as well. The team will still need to sign Leger Douzable and/or Kenrick Ellis for depth behind the "Sons of Anarchy" once Damon Harrison accepts his tender offer of course.

On the offensive side of the ball adding Ryan Fitzpatrick and Brandon Marshall via trades with the Texans and Bears respectively gives Geno Smith some solid competition and another threat at receiver so that Eric Decker can see more 1-on-1 coverage himself. James Carpenter fills a rather big hole at left guard, but does have some issues in pass blocking while re-signing Willie Colon solidifies the right side of the line. Bilal Powell stays with the team and can handle some more of the load, if asked.

Now that some major holes have been addressed on both sides of the ball the NY Jets need to look at whom they will draft in April to close the remaining roster gaps. The Jets still hold the 6th overall selection in the 2015 NFL Draft and I would prefer to see them use it on either Amari Cooper (Alabama) or Kevin White (West Virginia) as they still need another threat at wide receiver. Besides filling depth there they should look at utilizing their remaining picks on a young edge pass rusher who can also set the edge against the run, another running back to help compliment the bull back(Chris Ivory), a decent offensive tackle (not a long-term project like some recent picks), a powerhouse inside linebacker (to eventually replace the re-signed David Harris), and possibly more depth at either DT or NT should Ellis and Douzable not return.

As we get closer to the 2015 NFL Draft I will reveal some prospects that may best fit the aforementioned needs listed above. For now new General Manager Mike Maccagnan and Head Coach Todd Bowles should like what they see of the New York Jets roster.
