Well now that the entirety of the 2015 NFL season is over with the Broncos winning the Super Bowl I can take the time to reflect back on the 10-6 season of my New York Jets.
As with any first time coach the players responded positively and the team started out at 4-1. They hit a rough patch in the middle stretch where they went 1-4 then won 5 straight to climb to within a win of the playoffs only to lose a second time to the Bills lead by former coach Rex Ryan, by an identical score of 22-17.
Looking back there were several games they just flat out played poorly in, versus the Raiders and Texans, and had a horrible first half versus the Eagles. If any one of those games had gone their way or they earned one win against Buffalo then we might have seen them in the "tournament." In a way I am glad they didn't make the playoffs because their would be that much more pressure to do it again next season where they will be playing a second place and tougher schedule than the last place schedule they had in 2015.
Looking forward to free agency, the draft and the biggest needs of this team it's fairly obvious. They need to get younger and faster at several key positions, offensive line, and linebacker being the biggest on both sides of the ball. They need speed on special teams as well as in the pass rush plus they need some guys to provide depth when top tier talent, like running back, goes down.
The good news for General Manager Mike Maccagnan is that he has the ability to really turn over this roster if he chooses with 19 unrestricted free agents to be and 3 restricted ones. I, for one, would like to see Ryan Fitzpatrick return as quarterback, since I don't believe a another viable option will present itself since this time around the Jets have very little salary cap money available. If several players are to stick around, like Antonio Cromartie, he will have to restructure and take a much smaller cap hit. I do hope the Jets play it smartly with Muhammad Wilkerson and pay him what he truly due, not just give him the franchise tag number for 2016.
The outlook for 2016 and beyond for the New York Jets is as bright as I've seen in many years being a Jets fan. They have to play it wisely and build not just for the now but for the near term. I believe we have the nucleus of players and front office staff to get it done. Lets hope the right personnel decisions are made and we put another winner on the field in 2016.
